AT, that's an interesting take on things. If a firm was setting to buy a stock it could reduce estimates and, if the stock was thinly followed, have a big effect on the consensus number; then make out like bandits when the earnings came in above the artificially deflated expectations. Hadn't ever thought of that one....

Of course this would never happen in the real world, where front-running does not exist and there is an impenetrable firewall between the trading desk and the analysts' side of the house.
