Jesus' world was sort of a swirling mass of religions, and people were incorporating pagan, Christian and other beliefs willy nilly. In fact, one of the things the PBS special brought out is how some pagan symbols, like the lamb over Jesus' shoulder, were brought in from other belief systems. Don't forget the Christians were trying to get followers, so they had to compete in a heady religious climate.

What I said originally is that in Jerusalem, when Jesus was alive, there was complete freedom of religion, and that the pagan religions were very inclusive. What happened later under Nero was not part of what I was discussing.
