Bob, the quote wouldn't surprise me as being correct. Their stated goal is to be "first to market" in order to be the dominant player. However, how can one be first to market when Toyota and GM are also targetting 2004 for production ready vehicles? Seems like a tie, unless Daimler comes out BEFORE then. They've built 4 vehicles in the space of 3 years and will likely have a couple more soon (Necar IV and V), so nothing would surprise me at this point.

Regards

Bob, the quote came from the Dow Jones News/Retrieval Service.

Monday, December 15

The following is a stement made by Jurgen E. Schrempp, Chief Executive Officer of Daimler-Benz,
"Sales won't be affected in 1998 by this technology," Schrempp said. " If we achieve what we project, I think we can go into serious production for cars sometime in 1999 or 2000."

This statement is very interesting, especially if you combine it with the following remark made by Ford Chairman Alex Trotman.

" With our collaborative efforts, we think we can ACCELERATE (caps are mine) the commercial viability and implementation of fuel cell vehicles."

The date that has been used in most press releases to date is 2003 or 2004. My spin on all this is that they are aiming to have cars on the road in the year 2000...the turn of the century. A lot of exciting things will happen in the year 2000...this could be one of them.
