Jane, I have seen web pages about the archaeological evidence for Sodom and Gomorrah, probably the same ones that you have.

There were many events that really happened in early times that made their way into oral and written history. Men back then did not know very much about science, for the most part, and ascribed many early historical events to magic, or to the power of God.

You can certainly choose to believe that God caused what happened at Sodom and Gomorrah. But many people can accept what is in the archaeological record and believe that it was a natural calamity of some sort. The archaeological record does not prove that God was involved, really.
