>>>Reagan was never a hero of mine..supposedly he used to fall asleep
in meetings..if I remember correctly, he used to make his advisers
give him indexcard reports..he made his judgments based on his own
experiences in his life rather than reviewing global history..
His power,in my mind, came from his belief system..he never blinked..
just remember some of his press conferences..he had no doubt..people
lunge towards certainty..even the people he hurt through legislation
blindly looked up to him...he was the greatest speaker..the ultimate
father figure who told everybody everything will be all right..>>>

Forgive me for this subtle attempt to undermine a `liberal' you in you. In a good spirit of confrontation and in the name of the First Amendment allow me to state my absolute belief that if not for the President of the USA named Ronald Wilson Reagan, the present world would have been much different. For starters the role of people behind Iron Curtain, as you suggest and as I suspect you imply leaders such as Gorbachev, is largely misunderstood and at best overstated. (regular folks had no role except for few dissidents willing to sacrifice their life) None dreamed of the collapse of the "evil" empire, some envisioned a "communism" with a human face. (can not exist) Surrounded by leaders (except Margaret) that promoted "detante" (not surprising French for "peaceful coexistence") with strong demand from business community to continue to allow Soviets to channel Western technology to sustain regime and empire. The conclusion by the time Reagan came to power was universal: there were more regimes under Soviet dominance or influence or inspiring to be than not.. communism of the worst brand was winning and as Baker pointed out so rightly Western leaders were apologizing for this. I do not ant to restate Tom's summary about restoring American strength, economic , emotional and military, under inherited superinflation/high unemployment condition. He never lost the ball (even if sleeping during meetings-as he should have) all under vicious struggle with Democrats over defense program (much more than that-ultimate destruction of "Evil Empire"

Now the only "weapon" of the liberal revisionism" of recent history directed against Reagan, the man that literally changed the modern history is that in the process he run-up the bill .. He was totally "misunderstood " by liberals that up to this date have no clue as what has happened forget any clue about nature of the "evil" empire .. and totally cynically unappreciated now.(forget about a purposeless debate of the role of Democratic Congress in running outrageously ridiculous social programs ALA Asbestos Removal from the Buildings )

What Reagan did? He created conditions where Empire could no longer not only compete, but realized that it can not and must change. Domino effect was created..
One can argue whether his economic programs are part of the cycle none is relevant.. The emergence of China
and end of the cold war allowed Bill Clinton to claim place in history..
