4/98 Forbes blurb on ASND. Noel (H&Q) amazing comment that "Ascend will one day be bigger than rival Cisco Systems. "Cascade has more complex technology and there is more room for growth in the ATM switch and frame relay system markets that are used in wide-area networks."" [I haven't found this article on forbes.com. I sent a private message to Immi and he said it appeared in forbes.com this month. ASND bigger than CSCO. I guess I should add to my 2500 shares.]exchange2000.com To: djane (1352 ) From: Immi Wednesday, Apr 8 1998 11:52PM ET Reply # of 1354 Rough spell Ascend Communications (ASND) came through with a small gain of 5.8% in market value. After a good 1996 Ascend fell victim to events overseas. "Japan stopped buying," says Hambrecht & Quist analyst Joseph Noel. Why? Because Internet installations and PC sales slowed in the country. Then came the Asian crisis in midsummer while the Europeans, too, experienced a slowdown in demand for Internet access. Stateside, the release of Ascend's new software, MAX TNT, was delayed for two quarters because of hiccups with the new product. "Management lost some credibility with investors," says Noel, "and the stock price suffered." To improve technology know-how, Ascend purchased Cascade Communications for $3.5 billion. Noel predicts that Ascend will one day be bigger than rival Cisco Systems. "Cascade has more complex technology and there is more room for growth in the ATM switch and frame relay system markets that are used in wide-area networks." ATM in particular is seen as a way to integrate voice, video and data over the same line traveling at much faster speeds than are possible today. | top | See also: Tech companies establish presence on Forbes 500 The changing landscape of today's economy.
