RESEARCH ALERT - H&Q upgrades Intel

NEW YORK, April 9 (Reuters) - Hambrecht & Quist said on Thursday it raised its rating on shares of Intel Corp. to buy from hold and raised its calendar 1999 earnings estimate to $3.85 per share from $3.62 per share.

-- Personal computer industry's transition to the Pentium II is accelerating, analyst Robert Chaplinsky said.

-- ''In our opinion, Intel will experience microprocessor unit growth in the June quarter which should coincide with a trough in gross margins,'' he said.

-- Expects Dell Computer Inc.(DELL - news) to be bullish in analyst meeting on Thursday and confirm the PC industry's convergence to Pentium II, he said.

-- Intel's June quarter outlook should be better than the stock's recent performance suggests, he said.

-- ''We believe the company will experience a resusrgence in unit growth in the second quarter as the market continues its shift to P2 and channel inventory of older Pentium MMX is depleted,'' he said.
