Tobacco bill in US Congress may be modified - said McCain

Senate Commerce Committee chairman John McCain said Thursday that tobacco legislation that moved through his panel last week may be modified.

''I'm sure we may be looking at it,'' said McCain when asked if the legislation might be modified. ''We've just gone through the first steps, but one thing is, we won't be dictated to by the tobacco companies.''

On Wednesday, RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. (RN - news) Chief Executive Steven Goldstone said a proposed $368.5 billion settlement between the tobacco industry and the attorneys general of 40 states, agreed last year, was ''dead'' in Congress.

Goldstone said he had no hope for a comprehensive tobacco settlement this year.

McCain said today, ''I believe that the tobacco companies will do what they have to do, but the Senate and Congress will continue to act.'
