Pings...

Gottfried reported, along with some other performance-enhancing experiments, "When - just for kicks - I tried to ping wwww.microsoft.com it failed every time (100% packet loss). Yet, I could access the MS site in record time. Guess MS just does not accept pings."

There are some notorious bugs in Windows NT having to do with handling ping messages... SI was hit by one of those, and (I presume) got the patch from Microsoft just as soon as it was released. But it's probably easier, and effort saving, for microsoft.com's net admins to restrict ping packets at the gateway router(s) than to make sure they've handled everything... and why waste cpu time on undergraduates who are testing new crash software. There probably isn't a bigger target than Microsoft for crackers, except for maybe .mil or .cia.gov, so they're likely to run their gateway pretty strictly.
