Dell (DELL) retreated from earlier highs, but still paced a gain in PC stocks, up 1/2 to 67 1/2 on positive comments to analysts. CNBC reported Chief Executive Michael Dell sees an excellent environment for upgrades with the introduction of applications and processors requiring additional power. He also said the company will focus more on its brand-name recognition, particularly with consumers. However, Wall Street still doesn't expect Dell to make a big push in the sub-$1,000 market, as it represents only a small percentage of PC industry profits.

Chief Financial Officer Tom Meredith said he expects Dell's stock price to rise, since he considers the shares inexpensive relative to other blue-chip companies.

Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Schutte retained his "Recommended List" rating on the shares. "Aggressive pricing seems to be isolated to pockets of excess supply within the distribution channel, with little if any effect on Dell's overall business," said Schutte.
