IMO, the last semi-slump was brought-on, to some extent, by Microsoft's one year delay in introducing Windows 95. The chip and pc mfgrs were caught offguard as well as the application software vendors readying their 95 compatible upgrades. Even those people that wanted to try Windows95 on their 486s could delay purchasing memory for another year.

This time Windows98 upgrade will have much less of an effect. I think most people are content with Windows95. The system demands of 98 vs 95 are similar as far as I can see. And how many applications will "just have to be" upgraded? But I have to agree there are other gadgets out there to be built such as satellite phones, CDRadio players, all sorts of high speed internet equipment, and of course smaller cheaper and more capable computers.
