Canadian Business magazine says in its April 10 issue that Peter Munk was
so proud of his plan to stabilize gold prices that he told the world, which
was his first mistake. Writer Peter Shawn Taylor says the tycoon at the
head of Barrick Gold thought he had figured out how to rescue the gold
market, but he could not keep a secret. To stem the flow of central bank
gold into the market, Mr Munk came up with a rather clever and ambitious
solution. At the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this
past January, Mr Munk proposed that Barrick and other senior gold producers
could buy up all the gold the central bankers wanted to sell. Mr Munk told
the bankers that nobody can do a better job of monetizing their holdings
than the producers, so it was in their common interest to maintain
stability. TD Securities gold mining analyst Chad Williams says that in
theory, he thinks it is a great idea. The only problem with the idea is
that it is probably illegal.
