Oracle has appointed Mark Lucas to the new post of Kiosk General Manager in the UK. He will be involved with the creation of Oracle's Kiosk Architecture, based on Oracle's Network Computing Architecture, along with the sales and marketing of Oracle's Kiosk application cartridges. Mark joins Oracle from the Kiosk Management Corporation where he was President, creating strategic kiosk proposals for major US and European companies.

Mark will initially work within the public sector group, to enable UK citizens to access a growing range of services. Kiosk technology will be crucial in allowing the have-nots in society to be able to participate in electronic government, as outlined in the recent government.direct green paper. Using touch screen technology, kiosks will be multi- lingual and enable people to converse with local and central government administration. Once placed in municipal areas, such as the town hall, post office, schools and colleges, they will be used in much the same way as a cash machine or a public telephone.

Mark Lucas explained: "The days of the old "fat-client" kiosks are over. Network computing changes the whole price-performance paradigm when applied to the new video-hungry multimedia Intranet/ kiosk technologies. Oracle working right now with selected customers and business partners to create a range of affordable, portable, scaleable application cartridges for both government and commercial sectors."

Mark has recently had major involvement with significant kiosk project throughout Europe and also held the position of Vice President (European Operations) for the leading American Kiosk company, North Communications of California. Prior to this, Mark was the IBM Europe Kiosk Product Manager, making the first ever "pan-European" kiosk announcements, and bringing the first video-enabled kiosks to the Cannes Film Festival.

Stuart Turner, Director of Oracle UK Government sector said: "Mark brings five years of kiosk experience to Oracle, and will spearhead our drive to set the world-wide standards for kiosk architecture. His challenge will be to draw on the resources of the whole of Oracle Corporation, including our strengths in network-centric computing, multimedia information management, and consultancy services. By working in this way, Mark will position Oracle as the architect and enabler of this exciting new channel- to-market for all our customers."
