Barry,
RE:"My boss just came back from CeBit and immediately thereafter a
technical conference sponsored by a well known research firm one of
whose divisions specializes in the microcomputer industry.

AMD K-6 3D was all over CeBit, I am told, and was very impressive.
The analysts at the conference (these are NOT stock market people or
analysts) were saying that AMD is on the verge of huge success, the
yield problems are solved, the K-6 3D is real and very well designed, and
Celeron is a turkey. As a significant Fortune 500 company that is an
OEM, we have a Celeron, I had my hands on it today, although I haven't
seen it running in a system yet. From what I'm hearing, and from what I
saw, I am tending towards the thought that this is one idea that would
have been better left in the think tank; perhaps they would have been
better off just bargain-basementing 233 MMX's until they had the 2nd
generation Celeron chip with cache.

I think that Intel's going to have a rough time of it until Merced comes
out, I don't think that the current problems are short term, or that Intel
has seen the worst of what is happening. I do still think, in the long run,
that Intel will rule, but this is going to be one tough year, and it may
continue through much of 1999."

You have seen the light!

Regards, Jim

Barry - Re: "MD K-6 3D was all over CeBit, I am told,"

Tke K6-3D was not shown publicly by AMD at CeBIT.

It was only demoed in a private room by AMD.

It was also demoed at the November, 1997 COMDEX show in Las Vegas.

When the K6-3D is released, Intel will have the Katmai not too far behind to compete.

Remember - the Celeron is a product aimed at $800 - $1000 PCs.

If it sells, great.

If not - it will be a failure.

At least let it get out in the market before you declare it dead.

By the way, in 1981 didn't a few people laugh their butts off when a VERY large company from New York and Boca Raton introduced a dumb-downed PC with a sawed-off 16 bit CPU with only an 8 bit bus, called an 8088?

I think that company sold more than a few of these machines.

Paul

Barry:
Your boss works for IBM, no? I wouldn't say that he is an impartial judge! IBM is well-known to be in bed with AMD, trying to prop up the rapidly failing near-corpse at every opportunity. Of course he would sing the praises of AMD! How could he not?
If IBM truly believed AMD is on the verge of success, it would put its money on the line, and make a capital infusion. This would have prevented AMD's debt rating from going into the gutter, which will shortly interfere with its efforts to raise reasonably-priced cash. It seems clear to me that IBM is simply hedging its bets, but in its heart of hearts knows that AMD is a lost cause.
