Australia - 3Com ANZ Out To Eat Sirius Technologies Newsbyte News Network - Thu, Apr 09 1998 SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 1998 APR 9 (NB) The freshly ratified V.90 56K modem standard means serious warfare will soon begin in the Australian modem market, says 3Com Australia New Zealand {NASDAQ:COMS} managing director, Gerhard Rumpff. The 56K modem market is just beginning to rip in Australia after a proprietary standards war between chip-set makers 3Com and Rockwell turned buyers away in droves last year. But V.90 means the end of 33.6K modem sales, says Rumpff. "We want to see that market go away - we are going full out with V.90," said Rumpff. 3Com, via its newly acquired subsidiary US Robotics, dominates the modem market in most countries. But not in Australia, where the freshly merged NetComm and Banksia concerns (now known as Sirius Technologies) own a massive 60 percent of the market. Rumpff told reporters that 3Com Australia would eat a large chunk of Sirius Technologies' lunch over the next nine months. Admitting that 3Com has "less than 10 percent" of the A$130 million Australian modem market, Rumpff said he had been instructed by 3Com US to bring the local subsidiary's market share to 30 percent within the next nine months. "The only place I have to go is up," said an ebullient Rumpff, adding that every market share point Sirius lost would hurt the local manufacturer. "We are going to be out there taking market share from them (Sirius)," said Rumpff. 3Com's weapons will be a mix of Internet access time bundles and price cuts. 3Com already has a bundling deal with Telstra Big Pond and will announce a string of extra modem/access time bundling deals with other (as yet unnamed) ISPs within the next two weeks.
