PCI Limits and Loads

Seems that I remember the original PCI spec limited the number of PCI slots to two and that this was a load consideration.

Current limits may be an outgrowth of those original limits? Haven't bothered to research, but remember that Intel was playing catchup at the time to combat the VESA slots and rushed PCI to the market.

Also, if number of slots are a consideration, passive 12 slot boards may be an alternative. Most server/dual processor towers accommodate 12 slot boards.

Haven't looked at 12 slot mobos for several years, but assume they have kept pace with the transition from ISA to PCI.
