Actually there is a tremendous amount of natural gas available, if it is collected for distribution. Currently huge amounts of natural gas are being flared off oil wells instead of being collected. If a concerted effort was made to capture it instead, it could be used to produce methanol to fuel millions of cars. It is not yet economical to do so though. There are also tremendous reserves of natural gas in the world to be tapped. Methanol can also be made from the gasification of coal, biomass or wastes.

Hydrogen can be produced with no emmissions by using solar power, wind power and hydroelectric dams. It takes lots of electricity to produce hydrogen though, so the economics and pollution impact have to be looked at. One idea is to use off-peak capacity at hydroelectric generation facilities to produce hydrogen. There's any number of possibilities but they must be better developed before we see widespread use.
