Dale:

Thanks for the superdisk link. I still believe these are products that can coexist with syquest. imation's ls120 is fine for storage but unacceptable for running apps due to speed. the sparq can run apps.

however - the threat is if a superdisk company can get scsi speed connection and still read 1.4 and 720k disks.

or, perhaps the 1.4 dies in place of 100-200meg $5 diskettes.

thinks aren't sounding good for syquest right now. i thought i was in for the long haul - but i don't want to sit around 3 for another 9 months.

perhaps now is the time to bail, watch the stock and jump back in 3Q if the competition hasn't established a better hold.

in my deep gut i still wonder if IOM would be the way to go - they have the capacity and distribution in place. sure the zip is history, but i can't believe their R&D is dead with nothing on the horizon.

syquest is sexy, but i don't think they have the resources to pull a knock out punch. it feels like they are forever doomed to play catch up along with periodic warrant conversions to cover short term working capital (not capacity expansion/marketing) - thus sticking the price at $3 for up to 12 months prior to folding.

One final thought: what kind of discipline can a company have that can just force the conversion of warrants and distribute new stock to cover working capital for some time? it almost sounds like the government and we know what a financial wasteland that organization is.

Syquest Iomega Sony Castlewood

The arrogance of that European Iomega manager in the "Superfloppy" article is a perfect example of the reason why IOM is held with such disdain by the Street, and is also the reason why Sony will hand Iomega's head to them this Summer. That is when Sony is due to roll out the HiFi drive, acccording to the article.

I would not be invested in ANY removable drive stocks right now. The competition is just going to be a bloodbath with Castlewood and Sony entering the fray. Castlewood is shipping beta units right now, and this is very bad news for Syquest and Iomega. Sony's HiFi Summer release is bad news more so for Iomega.

Castlewood's ORB already has one official OEM lined up- in one of Sanyo's digital audio recorders. One can bet that Sony's HiFi drive stands a very good chance of being Standard Equipment on every single computer Sony makes right out of the bat.

Dale,
For what's worth I'm looking at a full page add in the "Detroit Free Press", from Computercity and they have Imation,"SuperDisk" 120mb drive on sale for $99.99 (with $50 rebate)and Digital Research, "Superdisk" 120mb drive for $49.99 (with $50 rebate). Didn't these drives just come out, and now they are selling for under $50.00? On the same page they have the SparQ at $199.99. I'm not sure what that means but, I thought I would send it alone.
I do appreciate how you play "Devil's Advocate", even though you bought the stock and have traded it in the past. Sometimes I get carried away and only look on the bright side.
