Holly,

To answer your queries:

1. Steak 'n Shake fries are still kinda weak, but they have improved over what they offered years ago. Still kind of stringy and greasy.

2. The last Miss Hullings downtown closed a couple of years ago. I think there are still one or two Miss Hullings' cafeterias in area hospitals, but I'm not sure. My wife used to lunch frequently at the one downtown.

3. Crown Candy Kitchen must be one of the few gems that you missed during your days here. It has been around since 1913. It's located on St. Louis Avenue at 14th Street (just north of downtown) in what is now unfortunately a run down neighborhood. It has a soda fountain and a great lunch menu. Get there early because there isn't much seating. Maybe 10 or 12 booths and a lunch counter with 4 seats. The BLT and chocolate banana malt are to die for. They also make candy there, mostly molded chocolate stuff like Easter bunnies. If you can down 5 of their shakes or malts in 30 minutes, you get them free and your name is added to a plaque on the wall. When I worked downtown, I used to go there for lunch on Fridays. Now, I take my family there on Saturday or Sunday, maybe once a month.
