James, The universe that we live in is where we get the notion of before and after. The dimension of time that exists here is particular to this universe and can be limiting in thought if you can't get past that barrier. Look at Jesus's statement in John 8:58: Jesus said to them,"Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM ." Then look back to Moses and God talking at the burning bush Exodus 3:14 . Moses had asked what God's name is and who he should say sent him to the Israelites. "And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Not only is Jesus identifying Himself as the same God of the Old Testament and the same God that led the Israelites through the desert, but He is saying something about His attributes. Contrast what He said with a statement like, I was, or I will be, statements that involve time. He described Himself in such a way so He could identify Himself as One who exists outside of time. I AM. Jesus in John 17:5 states again His attributes And now, glorify Thou Me together with thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with thee before the world was ." Again in John 17:24 Jesus says, .........., for Thou didst love Me before the foundation of the world . In Revelation 1:8 Jesus says again: "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." Paul wrote in Hebrew 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever. God created the universe and time is part of that universe. But God was before the universe and does not exist in time but outside of that dimension which only governs what is inside this universe. God existed before time came into being and will exist after time ceases, He is not governed by it.
