The announcement you mentioned has nothing to do with IAUS, but with a program to create gigabit networks over fiber optic cables (i.e., to improve the "backbone" or infrastructure of the Internet). For a number of years, the government has been funding research in this area. Two Web sites on this topic are: ngi.gov [Next Generation Internet initiative] and internet2.edu [Internet2 project]

Here's another Web page with more info about the high speed Internet project (at National Public Radio): npr.org - the odd thing is that when I saw this posting it read "U.S. President Al Gore today announced..." . Hmmm.... maybe NPR knows something the rest of us don't...
