Mazda In Ford Alliance For Development Of Fuel-Cell Tech

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Mazda Motor Corp. said Wednesday it will participate in a new alliance with Ford Motor Co. of the U.S., Germany's Daimler-Benz AG and Ballard Power Systems Inc. to develop fuel-cell technology for future automobiles.

Ford, Daimler-Benz and Ballard together will invest about $700 million, consisting of cash, technology and assets, in the new alliance which aims to become the world's leading commercial producer of fuel-cell-powered drivetrains and components for cars, trucks and buses.

A Mazda spokeswoman said there will be no financial participation on
Mazda's part. Mazda is involved in the venture through its close relationship with Ford. Mazda is 33.4% owned by Ford.

The spokeswoman added Mazda is studying what its role in the alliance will be, and that no concrete decisions have been made yet.

Mazda has developed a fuel-cell electric vehicle, the Demio FCEV, using its own fuel-cell technology. The FCEV is considered to be an alternative next-generation electric vehicle with an on-board electric generator consuming hydrogen as fuel, unlike the conventional electric vehicle which utilizes an on-board battery as an energy source.
