Once again, back it up or your spreading bullsh*it!

Re: . Like I said, I have been hearing from some of their suppliers that DELL is pushing back orders (DELL uses a JIT system so this is where a slowdown would be seen first).

Tell us what suppliers and where are you hearing it from.

Greg

Oh sure say what you will, but how do you explain DELL growing 3-4 times the market. Dell is not interested in the sub-1000 market and they are increasing their prices relative to others. In the 80s they used to sell their products at 40% discount relative to others now it is less than 10% while all the others are giving away the store. Haven't you heard of CPQ giving away free monitors,oh sure there is lot of money in that exercise.

Source: Dallas Morning News (excerpts)

_ Dell Computer Corp. is developing a strategy to promote its brand image as more upscale while effectively raising some prices at a time when most in the personal computer business are focused on selling cheaper machines.

The marketing plans were unveiled Thursday at a meeting of financial analysts in New York, where Dell's forecast was far rosier than Wall Street has been hearing from others in the PC industry.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has steadily been reducing the discounts it offers during the past decade, gaining business along the way. ''We are a counter-intuitive company,'' explained Thomas J. Meredith, senior vice president and chief financial officer.

In 1988, Dell PCs were about 40 percent less expensive than competitors' machines, and the company's market share was less than 2 percent. Today, the discount is less than 10 percent, and Dell's market share is more than 6 percent, the company said in its presentation.

I have been in this business 30 years. Mr. Dell comments yesterday remind me of another comments made about 15 years ago by another VIP in computer business. As some of you remember, Mr. Olson.CEO of DIGITAL EQUIPMENT at the time and the second largest computer CO. after IBM at the time( Before CPQ, DELL even existed) used to ignore the trend in PC. He used to make fun of PC and mentioned this is a fad and everybody will have a PC in her or his closet collecting dust. His policy almost destroyed DEC. Stock before split came down from $400.00 per share to $23.00 and now finally sold to CPQ. Ignoring under $1000.00 PC market which is today 50% of the market remind me of Mr. Olson remarks. PR and Ad can do so much for you for sometimes but eventually one has to face the reality.

Good morning Lucretius,

Now that others are dropping their prices, DELL is losing that advantage so they are trying to find a new niche' in the high end mkt.

I think that if you do the arithmetic you'll find that as a result of a very efficient JIT manufacturing system Dell's advantage increases when prices are dropping.

I have been hearing from some of their suppliers that DELL is pushing back orders.

At first blink this doesn't square with what Michael Dell has been telling us, but there is are potential explanation. One such explanation could be that what you heard is not true. Another is that Dell has found alternate suppliers or better quality components. It's difficult to comment on this observation without details.

Regards,

Paul

re Goldman left their rating unch'd and didn't raise numbers? The other analysts made no comments?

I'm like Sherlock, listening to the dog that didn't bark...

o Analysts are very accustomed to and wary of PR blasts in all forms.
o Analysts did not raise their recommendations on DELL, yet.
o BUT, none of them downgraded, either.

Afterthought: However, it is possible that the analysts left impressed positively or negatively, and are waiting for a chance to unload or stock up before they make their new views known. The evidence arguing against this is that they are not known for their cohesiveness or common agenda.

If the meeting had created or increased analyst concern, do you think that we would have seen downgrades by now? ==> "You betchum, Red Ryder!" At DELLs current premium to industry and historically high PE, I think that any doubts about DELL's future earnings picture would have been picked up and transmitted on analyst seismographs ere now.

Still DELLish, 3.

LT,

I think that you have seen some valuable indicators here, and was wondering how they compared with the others in the industry? I see on the thread that GTW is having some trouble, and we all know about the CPQ problem.

I don't see that DELL is in any big trouble, as you pointed out this Q will probably be on target, but is the whole industry due for a 'flat' period?

As an 'investor', how do feel about the 'connectors' for the next segment to watch? I see that Yahoo, Aol and some others are currently performing quite well, albeit their P/E ratios are a bit high! How do you feel about those kind of ratios? Personally, I have seen companies do both well and poorly with high or low P/E ratios.

I have to say that the expansion overseas for DELL looks very promising and will allow DELL to penetrate both the European and Asian markets more effectively. Their JIT may work well in those markets due to the merging of the display terminals 'on the fly' as the computer is shipped. (The VDT and Computer have not really run together, as I understand it.)

I did see that a couple of the houses did recommend the 'buy', but you never know who is going to be right! I think that it also has to do with whether you are 'making a market' in the security or just trading in that security! While I am interested in what they say, I have real reservations in following their advice, unless they agree with me, but I was going to do whatever anyway! It is always easy for me to take the credit for my successes, and look to 'blame' another for my 'failures'! But, let's face it, my investments, in the last analysis, are only my responsibility. It is one of the reasons that I track this 'thread' so carefully! I find that, without exception, BULL or BEAR, or casual contributor, the posts contain 'true' positions, as opposed to posting what 'you want to hear'!

Thank you for you kind response,

Best of luck,

Ken

Gonna be exciting times in the weeks ahead.
The universe will unfold as it should,
and many questions will be answered......

Can the market continue zooming to new stratospheric heights?
Are Dell Bulls the propellent to this market rocket?
Does 1st-quart earnings slow-down count?
Are oxygen-starved brains prone to hallucination?
Will the trend still be my friend?
Will my real friend let me know?
Is the impact from Asia's downturn just begin, or left?
Are there pcs in Asia? <just jokin'>
Will Dell and Dow move in opposite directions?
Is Mike Dell and David Copperfield teaming up?
Did Mike Dell say "love me in other ways besides pe"?
Will Dell Bulls bend down chanting "we will, we will"? <not jokin'>
Can my friend build his new pc in 30 minutes flat?
Is this JIT or BTO?
Will the new maths " bought in at $5, held on at $70, sold at $30" take off?
Will Dell Bulls turn Bears sagely proclaim "told them 'not'"?
Will shorting Dell be the favourite past-time of Dell Bear threaders?
Will the 3 of them there join here hollerin' "we give up"?
Is a female bull a cow and a female bear, a bear?
Does she have a life?

stay tuned.....
