People who cannot accept that there is a lot of random chaos, and inexplicable horror and terror in the universe, use natural calamities to justify their belief in God. In olden times, people sacrificed animals and humans to make the gods happy, to change the weather, whatever. It is a very normal human condition for people to assume they, or someone else, sinned, and that is why something bad happened.

You are right, there is nothing in the archaeological record to prove what happened at Sodom and Gomorrah, either way. It does not disprove the Biblical record, and it does not prove it, either.
