Instrument Stocks Fall Between Wall Street's Cracks

Not too many groups have managed to remain hidden from view, as investors quickly glom on to good performance. But according to Salomon Smith Barney strategist Marshall Acuff, one group -- manufacturers of precision instruments -- remains undervalued despite consistently strong earnings growth. These companies, which include Thermo Electron and National Instruments, make high-tech instrumentation for industries like semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and research laboratories.
