NetWare 4.11 by Herman Mehling Orem, Utah -- Novell Inc., the company that practically owned the LAN OS market back in the early '80s, is trying desperately to retain customers in an increasingly Microsoft Corp.-dominated marketplace. Just weeks ago, Novell fired its latest salvo at Microsoft-NetWare for Small Business 4.11. The product is a networking solution specifically designed to meet the needs of small businesses, said Rick Balazs, product line manager in the platform services group at Novell, based here. It is priced at $995 for a five-user license and $65 for each additional user-significantly lower than Microsoft's BackOffice Small Business Server, which costs $1,499 for a five-user package. New components of NetWare for Small Business include Novell's GroupWise 5.2 E-mail and collaboration software; Netscape Communications Corp.'s FastTrack Web server and Computer Associates International Inc.'s fax, backup and antivirus solutions. "GroupWise will allow small businesses to communicate and collaborate within their organization, as well as communicate across the Internet with their partners and customers," said Balazs. "The Oracle8 server will give small businesses the opportunity to build network computing applications around an Oracle database," he said. The Oracle8 data server will be available by the end of May, said Novell officials. "Novell has a huge installed base of NetWare users and is trying hard to hold on to them with products such as NetWare for Small Business," said James Staten, an analyst at Dataquest Inc., a market-research firm in San Jose, Calif. "Novell is doing a good job of making it cost-effective for NetWare installations to upgrade but is not doing such a good job of winning new business." NetWare upgrade prices are $595 and $895 for five- and 10-user licenses, respectively. Novell IntranetWare for Small Business customers can get a free upgrade if they purchased after Jan. 27 or for $195 if they purchased before then. Copyright c 1998 CMP Media Inc.
