Market Wrap

Hit the Road Jack

Sleeping with the enemy is never a prudent stratagem. That is, unless you're Sharon Stone in"Basic Instinct." So Dell Computer's move to send Digital Equipment Corp.'s services group hiking was a necessary move, distancing Dell from rival Compaq.

In a market of ever-competitive computer prices, Dell announced Thursday that it would not be renewing its service and support contract with Digital. With that bridge burned, Dell is searching for a new organization to assume the vacant service role.

Dell's CEO Michael Dell met with analysts Thursday to discuss the road that lies ahead for the computer maker. While other OEMs feel the pinch from the Asia crisis and falling PC prices, Dell maintains a strong market position through its build-to-order manufacture strategy, which allows for relatively small inventories.

Dell will try to stay on the technological forefront by moving from so-called end-of-life products and shipping only Pentium II computers. Dell closed Thursday up 1 15/16 at 67 11/16.

GM,

I never 'SHORT' a stock. I either have a 'position' or not. Currently I have a position, and as LONG as the stock performs, I am LONG. If and when the stock ceases to perform, I am LONG GONE.

While I have been following this thread quite closely, ie every day every message, I have not heard the explanation that has satisfied my curiosity as to why DELL hasn't performed to pre-split levels yet, and why there wasn't more positive stock action after the meeting?

Now, Monday, the stock may take the anticipated 'up tick', and that would answer my one question, but why not the 'up tick' after the split?

I would never cast dispersions on MSD, but I have worked for several different companies, and it has been my experience that the 'public' information is sometimes different from the 'private' information.

As for whether the stock is undervalued or overvalued, I don't know. Especially recently, some stocks have performed well or poorly regardless of valuation.

I trust this post finds you ready for Easter and all that!

Warmest regards,

Ken
