Lawrence,

<<Sure. I ordered, asked politely what drive they were going to ship it with. They said IBM. Couple weeks later, the computer came in; drive was a Maxtor. I guess BTO and JIT aren't really for the lowly consumer, eh?>>

You shoulda told em what you wanted. Obviously you had not seen enough ads to have a predetermined idea to influence you. Maybe you would have said Seagate cause you like to play the sports book. Hehe

<<Computers remain a commodity.>>

Amen. Which brand of bread do you buy? Same one or first one you happen to pass? How about table salt? Look for a young girl in a rain shower? Or laundry detergent. or etc etc. Name alone can be a differentiator.

I'll tell you what I dislike about the Seagate ads. I think they are condescending and abstract to a fault. They go to some idea of a broad message about the information revolution. I would think that, while not all the buying public understands a disk drive and how it works, they do understand messages about quality and service and/or innovation. Thats where I would have hammered the message.

Hey, you think there is any truth to a relaxing of the excess inventorys at the high end and Seagate worming back into a lead position there?

Best,
Stitch
