UPDATE 3: Cops Charge George Michael With Lewd Act

By Adam Sandler

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Singer George Michael was arrested late Tuesday for allegedly committing a lewd act in the restroom of Will Rogers Park across from the Beverly Hills Hotel.

According to Beverly Hills Police, Michael was alone in the restroom at the park on Sunset Boulevard when an undercover officer allegedly saw him commit the act Tuesday evening.

Police Dept. spokesman Lt. Ed Kreins declined to go into details of the act or the arrest, and the police report was sealed. He also specifically declined to say whether Michael had exposed himself or masturbated in the restroom.

Kreins said that Michael, who was arrested outside of the park, did not proposition the officer. Michael lives about a mile from the park and the hotel.

He was handcuffed and taken to police headquarters where he was booked for investigation of misdemeanor lewd conduct and released after posting $500 bail. He is scheduled for arraignment in Beverly Hills Municipal Court on May 5.

The park had been under police surveillance by plain clothes officers following complaints of lewd conduct at the park. On the day of Michael's arrest, another man also was arrested for investigation of lewd conduct at the same restroom in an unrelated incident, Kreins said.

Michael was not immediately recognized by police. He gave the arresting officer his real name, Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, and only later supplied his stage name and said he was a singer, Kreins said.
