Thanks Alex, you and Darleen both for sharing your thoughts.

Your comments about history and change are well taken. But I want to revisit this concept of "the more things change" for a moment.

We have witnessed the shift from an agrarian society to an industrial and now a service based economy. My life is immeasurably different from that of my forebears 100 years ago. Europe has witnessed the shift from monarchy to fascism to democracy, Russia from serfdom to Bolshevism to... China from warlords to colonialism to communism to..

On the other hand Roman civilization carried on for 400 years under the administrative system established by Octavian and Livia, leading to the development of European civilization and leaving the Roman imprint upon its culture. In our lifetimes, we are witnessing the spread of the popular vote, the Westernization of the Orient, the disappearance of international borders, and an unprecedented technological revolution .

We will see how far Western culture can spread, and how long democratic societies can sustain themselves, but I think these forces have developed a momentum which should carry them well beyond our own lifetimes.
