<<KIST Develops High-Density VPOMA

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), in cooperation with Samsung
Electronics and Arizona University of the United States, has developed a high-density
versatile polychromatic optical memory analyzer (VPOMA).

The VPOMA software, which helps design polychromatic optical memory and 16x optical
memory discs, is part of a project to develop materials for high-density optical memory.

The new analyzer can be used for many kinds of optical memories, regardless of their laser
wavelength, the institute said.

Using the analyzer, Samsung has developed a 2.6-GB (gigabytes) disc with a 0.74-micron
track pitch and 0.6-micron recording path. The company is working on optimizing the disc
with a recording density of 4.7 GB.


KIST plans to commercialize its VPOMA through TUY Laser of Germany and develop
materials for high density optical memory by 2000. >>
