Hiram: Having seen your rational investment style on HLIT to RMTR, I was surprised to see you on this board. Thought I was missing something from YHOO story. Realized later, it was the small float that was allowing the true short squeeze. Anyway, like Tulip-mania this is going to implode someday. Question is when to buy those put? Thought I would look to history for the guidance.

Best place to start is of course the high tech companies that changed the world: INTC and MSFT. Amazingly, going back to 1991, these stocks never had P/S above 10. CSCO was the only company sporting such high P/S. Highflyers like SHVA and XYLN never had P/S above 20. Then again they crashed. AWRE sports PS of 45, but it actually has proprietary technology. Semis never seem to see P/S of 20. RMBS being only exception with PS of 45.

Thought visit the biotech neck of the woods. AMGN barely touched 10. CHIR had a touch down at 18. CEPH actually seems to have seen P/S of 24. Personal favorite LGND is still trading below 12. Turns out a number of failed biotechs did see P/S of 15-25, only to crash within next 4 months. Of course, one should not forget the Cabot momentum stocks. Interestingly, IOM never had a steep P/S even in 95-96. PRST was only the legendary one. In 1991, it actually had a PS of 160. It stands now at 6.

Looking at YHOO, not having a proprietary technology or cozy relationship with INTC or MSFT, when is the time to buy puts?
History says give three-to-five months for free fall after the parabolic rise. What has been your experience ?
