BArry, Browsing is tough at Amazon. You have to pretty much know the author or the title to make any headway at all. If you go for the lists, they tend to use the best sellers, which makes sense for them, but not for me. Also, they use a lot of publisher's blurbs. I hate most of those. I saw a paperback with an intriguing title on the racks yesterday. The blurb said, "reading this is just like watching an episode of The X-Files." My first impression was, oh, great, a boring story about two homely FBI agents seeking unlikely creatures. But I read the synopsis and considered buying. On Amazon, one quote like the X-files one would have turned me off forever without another look.

I have seen the same thing many times. "As good as Elmore Leonard, maybe better," one quote read. I can't stand Elmore Leonard. In a book store, I am likely to go beyond such turnoff statements. On Amazon, it stops me dead in my tracks. MB
