Wow has Lucent been on a tear lately. The industry
trend toward one stop shopping has applied to
telecommunications infrastructure equipment in a big
way, not to mention the demand for Global System for
Mobile Communications infrastructure equipment. Paine
Webber just raised its price target on the stock to $84
based on 40 times 1999 earnings per share ($2.10).
The company reports on April 22, and numbers should
be on the high side of consensus. With analysts raising
their multiples for the stock, numbers are going to be
moving up. Interestingly, Murray Hill, N.J.-based
Lucent is almost at the same equity market capitalization
as its former parent, AT&T ($95 billion for Lucent and
$107 billion for AT&T). Lucent employees are loving it.
