Hi Greg, "What's your opinion of Mark?" Most early Church Fathers believed that the Gospel of Mark was recollections by St. Peter of events he had experienced first or events that had been told to him by Jesus and other immediate participants in the events. I agree with this view. The style in the Gospel of Mark reflects St. Peter's character--straightforward and without a whole bunch of theological speculation. St. Peter was a close observer of Jesus' divine and sinless life. Can you imagine what it would be like to live closely with a friend-teacher and never find any sin or fault in him. This is why Peter, after living with and observing Jesus' Words, behaviour and miracles could answer Jesus' question, "who do you say that I am" with "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God." It is also important to note that Peter and most of the other Apostles who had experienced Jesus' at close quarters were willing to die horrible deaths rather than deny what they had seen and heard. These were simple men who did not have the wild imaginations of the college crowd. They simply stated what they had seen and experienced. Also, remember that the Apostles had no idea that Jesus would rise from the dead until it became an observable fact; even then, Thomas had to put his hands in the wounds to believe. When the historical and spiritual reality of the Gospel accounts enters your heart, you will begin to see why they were willing to die painful deaths rather than simply deny what they had seen. experienced and heard. Again, may Chirst open the eyes of your heart as you journey thorugh His word, and may he do it according to your desire for truth and reality. Regards Emile
