Far as asthma's concerned, I've said many times that my info is that smoking can block attacks. I know one former asthmatic (and non-smoker) who swears it works.

Further on asthma (and all allergies): let's not forget there's a psychological component. Stress exacerbates 'em. And certainly people have become far more anxious about potential health risks in recent years than they were when I was a child. The slightest problem becomes a major crisis, requiring batteries of tests and years of treatment. I have the impression that many believe that to feel absolutely wonderful all the time is our natural state. I very much doubt it.
