I'm sure people will say that they use abbreviations like <g> for brevity because of the tremendous time constraints they have in their personal lives (Like it takes that much longer to write <grin> or <grinning>). What I believe is that, like you said, in the impersonal nature of corresponding electronically, it is an attempt to be casual and buddy-like. It is like a code that newer users of the internet have to ask "What does that mean?". Of course, the more experienced users then reply and, voila, a conversation has started. Contact has been established. It is like the perennial question that people want to know the answer to, lest they be in some way excluded from this "secret code" of the internet that they have so recently discovered. Naturally, the person who now is "in the know" will continue in the tradition and answers the questions they once asked. This will continue ad infinitum and possibly ad nauseum (for those who are tired of answering those questions).

I had the situation where I had to ask what <eom> meant and David Lawrence kindly answered my question. I appreciated his response. I will be ready to share my new found knowledge to others in a continual "passing down" of information that has truly become the nature of the web. I will try to be a helpful translator to those who I will encounter with similar quesions, in keeping with the spirit of those who have helped me along my way.
