Morning opinions...about ASND, but related.... Brief: Ascend reported Q4 net of $0.26 a share, a penny ahead of the First Call mean view, versus $0.31 a share in the year-ago period... Quarterly revenues rose 4.1% to $305 mln... Forward looking statements should give investors something to smile about as company sees strong demand for network backbone systems for the remainder of 1998, and sees strong growth in the consumer segment of its business... With the exception of Cisco, networkers ended little changed on Thursday, but that shouldn't be the case today as the group should get a lift from Ascend's news... Industry leader, Cisco, dropped 1 1/4 despite contentions from Cowen & Co. that stock looks attractive at current valuations, and that layer 3 switch mania is more hype than substance given that less than 4% of CSCO revenues are vulnerable to layer 3 switches... Cowen rates Cisco a Strong Buy and has a price target of $77.
