NEW YORK (April 6, 1998 7:13 p.m. EDT nando.net) - International Business Machines Corp. is launching a new consulting practice aimed at capitalizing on the shift underway in the media and entertainment businesses.

IBM will formally unveil the consulting practice Monday at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas. The company also plans to announce contracts with CBS Corp. and Time Warner Inc.'s WB Television Network.

The planned announcements point to what IBM believes is a major opportunity as broadcasting moves to adopt high definition television (HDTV) and other digital developments.

For technology companies, that could mean booming demand for sophisticated equipment for data storage and retrieval as well as assistance in managing the transition.

Under its contract with WB Network, IBM will provide a system that will allow the network to manage, distribute and insert local advertisements and announcements digitally to cable affiliates in more than 100 markets.

The CBS contract calls for IBM to develop a news archive that will provide storage and retrieval of a wide range of information including news and stock footage and other kinds of television and radio broadcast content.<<

Regards

Louie
