Hello penni
An amazing experience, you can console yourself with the thought that if these men were ninth graders, professional sports may be their only hope. <g> You did say something which I would like to comment on.

(Someday maybe a man will help us women understand this mentality-that some injuries are not just ok, but even desirable)

Team sports rely on an internal hierarchy that is also determined by the team, with the assistance of the coaches. You can't make a silk purse and all that. Your son was double teamed, the minions (bad guys) recognized your sons position clearly in his team, the nail that sticks out often gets pounded. Greater expenditure of effort on your sons part allowed his team members as well as himself, to fend off any injury to spirit <g> Any physical injury incurred in sustaining team members is noble, the same goes for injuries received in many other noble causes, skateboarding the pursuit of young women etc...

Floor burns are badges of honor. They symbolize great hustle and desire, the hallmark of team play, as far as I am concerned. I hope your son's jammed finger isn't on his shooting hand.

When I played football in high school, our coach wouldn't let us wear forearm pads until our arms were black and blue from wrist to elbow. Unfortunately, I wasn't forearm pad worthy until about 6 games into the season.
