Couldn't agree more if you put your order in over the weekend. Your example is the best case of "not planning too far ahead for the kill" that I have seen posted lately! I have seen stocks that have jumped $3/share from closing to opening, and I'm sure other investors must have better stories than this.

However, if you want the stock, and wait until the market opens and check the on-line quotes, it is not so scary. At least you get an idea of the risk exposure involved, and if you are not "trading," a market order, when you know where the market on the stock is, is fine in my opinion.
