Bo Bob,

I agree with much of what your post says. One sentence strikes home:

A surgeon who might boast of his being self sufficient and having been a self made man,

I am in fact a surgeon and worked and borrowed my way through Med school, but I agree with you that society paved the way for me as you point out. It was a give and take situation. I worked very hard. I had jobs in the Blood Bank, as an OR technician, in the local liquor store, and in a private hospital where I did histories and physicals on the private patients for $1.25 apiece! They also paid me $5 to spend the night in the hospital and take calls.

On the other hand, I got a scholarship after my first year which paid my tuition and fees. I borrowed from the National Defense Student Loan Fund to make up the rest of my deficit and paid them back later with minimal interest. When I wanted to take a surgical residency, I entered the Air Force served for two years, then got them to "sponsor" me for another four years of surgery training. I paid them back by being an Air Force surgeon for an equal amount of time.

My point is that nobody is totally self made. Some have it easier than others. But there are plenty of areas where one may obtain help if you are willing to work hard and return what you took by service to this great country and its citizens. Remember the scene in "Treasure of Sierra Madre" where the old prospector insists that the mountain which has given them the gold be returned to its natural state before they leave? A good message.

Thanks for your post. It made me think about how we are all interconnected.

Jack

Hi-
I am still mourning your sister's death..and I just can't fathom how you must be feeling, especially on this holiday..
..that expression the good die young was so true in her case..
(when I first saw who posted to me I felt so very strange..I hope you read what she wrote about the Book of Job.I posted it At a bottom of Gold...
I think Al or Bo Bob Brain would have probably laughed at my reference
to Major Barbara...Undershaft would have probably pushed education,
healthcare etc not on humane grounds but with the belief that if we
could selfishly give a lift up to those in need, it would in the end
be good to the bottom line..(huge article in NYTimes today that workfare isn't working for most..
Bobby

Bo Bob Brain - good for you (or your sister) it needs to be said. Too many have their heads in the sand. They receive from the state all the time but don't seem to realise it. The days of laissez faire have gone forever, but so many, particularly the cons and neo-cons, elect to ignore thatwe live in a mixed economy It is nonetheless an imperfect old world. E

Can't remember ever disagreeing with Bo on anything except once when Bo said Zappa might fall to .19 C last year and she was right on that score. :( She certainly was civic minded and thought her views out carefully--an example of the type of people we should have running our govt. whether their stances happen to match mine on every issue or not. --Al
