It is interesting that he doesn't discuss the lack of a home recording product capable of storing a full length movie or event like the super bowl when it is in a HDTV format. DVD-RAM perhaps?

Also interesting that he sites a desire to avoid a beta/vhs standard conflict, but what good is a DVD standard if it can store HDTV format on a single disk?

A disk drive could do it of course, but it would need to be a removeable media.

I had never thought about this issue before. It seems to open up a whole new can of worms. Just as you start to think DVD is the great solution, then you see new formats for HDTV call for hugely bigger storage.

So, what gives? DVD or HDTV? What technology is going to replace the VCR? Can it come from the magnetic storage companies, or will it come from the optical storage companies?

Can anybody tell me why TV sets won't come with a processor and a cheap hard drive soon? Is there any reason why Sony won't sell a TV with the set top box inside? Sure would be nice to have a TV that could filter out commercials.

Mark
