Yea, I read the articles, but they doesn't say much about specs. Just the 3.6MB/sec MAX.

If you were marketing a floppy drive to compete with Zip, would you quote the burst rate (max?), or average sustained transfer rate, which although a lower number, is more indicative of real world performance?

Indeed, the floppy wars will heat up. Just don't forget that better technology and better performance aren't necessarily sure fire indicators of future commercial success (eg. Imation LS-120 and SyQuest EZ-135).
