Re -- most routers will require software functions resident inside IOS

Most routers at the edge of the LAN/WAN will. However for the core backbone ASIC based L3 switching, suffices. That is why even Cisco is thinking about a L3 switch (what a joke, after denying its viability all this time).

Furthermore, you should name some some of the functions provided by IOS and its uses, not provided by Bay's Accelar switches, if you want to carry out any meaningful further discussion.
