Borland Offers Free JBuilder University Edition to
Educators Teaching Java Programming

Company Also Launches New Educational Web Site for Professors,
Universities And Computer Science Students at
borland.com

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- To help encourage the popularity and
improve the quality of Java education in universities and colleges, Borland International, Inc.
(Nasdaq: BORL - news) today announced JBuilder University Edition, a special educational
version of its award-winning Java development tool. Available free-of-charge to qualified
educators, JBuilder University Edition is a customized version of the JBuilder integrated
development environment (IDE) created to assist university and college educators in teaching
proper programming techniques using the Java language. Borland also announced the launch of a
new informational website designed to promote the awareness and use of Borland's development
tools in Academia. Targeted at faculty, staff and students from computer science and engineering
studies, the site can be accessed at borland.com.

''Borland was one of the first software companies to provide high-quality, specially-priced
development tools to the education market,'' said Jennifer King, Borland's educational sales
manager. ''The fact that so many educators have selected Borland's Delphi, Pascal, C/C++ and
new Java products to teach the fundamentals of software programming is evidence of our
success. We are making the investment today in higher education because these schools are the
training ground for tomorrow's computer scientists, development managers and IT leaders.''

JBuilder University Edition

JBuilder University Edition is a customized version of the Borland JBuilder IDE, designed to
meet the unique needs of the education market. It was created from faculty requests for a Java
software development environment that focused on teaching proper Java syntax. JBuilder
University Edition includes a professional-level IDE with fully integrated application browser,
project manager, code editor, HTML viewer, graphical debugger and compiler. The software
can be legally distributed by educators to students and copied to campus computer labs.

''I am hopeful that with the introduction of JBuilder University Edition that faculty and student
use of Java will grow. Java is an excellent language to support the instruction of object-oriented
programming,'' said Carlin R. Smith Jr., professor at Purdue University. ''JBuilder University
Edition provides students the necessary grounding in Java fundamentals for a successful transition
to the professional version. Topics such as Remote Method Invocation (RMI), JavaBeans, and
Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) can be implemented productively with JBuilder. I am
implementing these topics in my course -- I challenge other educators to do the same.''

Availability and Ordering Information

JBuilder University Edition is available now from Borland. Qualified educators in the U.S. can
register to receive a master CD free-of-charge at
borland.com. Additionally, JBuilder University
Edition is scheduled to be available to students later this year, bundled in a number of leading
textbooks on Java programming. For more information on Borland's U.S. educational products
