Thanks Hawkeye, for pointing me to the UCS document.

All:

I ordered a copy of "Zeroing Out Pollution - The Promise of Fuel Cell
Vehicles" by Jason Mark, Published by The Union of Concerned
Scientists. ($6.00 + S&H)

It (the hard copy) arrived today, and contains 55 pp. of analysis
summary. It's the best compilation of facts and projections I've seen
yet.

It's a good read, for proponents and critics alike.

You can access UCS Publications (as Hawkeye previously mentioned) at:

IMO I think GM is just doing R+D buying the Toyota Prius and the Ballard fuel cells. It doesn't mean GM will work with Ballard or Toyota on Fuel cells in the future. GM already has a manufacturing relationship with Toyota building the Corolla and its GM conterpart,( I can't remember the name at the moment might be the GM Prizm).
If they do all get together it usually for low volume low margin
applications.

Although this goes on in the Auto industry all the time. The Japanese
first got their start copying the North American Auto designs then
refined them and made them better. The rest is history. So GM is saying Payback time, Be our R+D lab. :-)

But the point being is Fuel Cells vehicle will not become high volume
for quite a while and GM is doing R+D now rather than later when all
the FC patents expire. By then FCs will have a higher percentage
of vehicles sold.

BTW Good article on the Hybrid Electric as good or better than its
diesel counter part.

First-Ever Hybrid-Electric "Hummer"

The ultra-rugged combat vehicle, the first of its kind, boasts twice the acceleration and climbing capability of a conventionally powered "Hummer." It can zip from zero to 50 in 8 seconds and climb a 60% grade at 17 miles an hour. A conventional HMMWV takes 14 seconds
to accelerate from zero to 50 and can climb a 60% grade at 7 miles an hour. The hybrid's performance is all the more remarkable since, with a payload of 1,700 lbs., its gross vehicle weight (9,100 lbs.) is the same as a conventional HMMWV.

>>> There's a reason GM's market share is at an all time low. I wouldn't say that their buying 3 Priuses has much to do with their relationship with BLD.

The point seemed to be missed by many when GM announced it will buy more of BLD's fuel cells in a $3 million plus contract. I agree the stock behaved irrationally to a small contract that day, but the importance of that contract in my mind was that it came AFTER GM announced a major push into fuel cells on the part of it's global operations.
They said they had their own fuel cell they were testing but would still work with BLD going forward and then they order more BLD fuel cells. The point is that actions speak louder than words and that GM obviously feels it still needs to be working with BLD regardless of their own development efforts.<<<
