I wasn't questioning the economics of the solar cell from purely a cost standpoint, after all, its main purpose is to transform energy.

The discussion I was trying to provoke is how much energy is consumed during the manufacturing process of the cell vs. the energy it can produce during its lifetime? Consider the energy consumption from the exploration for raw material stage, mining, chemical processing, manufacture, assembly and shipping.
