Bay Networks (BAY) will add support for Microsoft Windows NT-based networks to its Net
access device for small businesses by the end of this month.

The move offers the latest evidence that various markets in the high-tech industry are rushing to
offer hardware and software that supports NT along with the incumbent in local networks,
Novell's NetWare operating system.

The software update for the BayStack Instant Internet line of Net access devices adds support for
networks based on IP (Internet Protocol), branching out from its roots supporting IPX, the
transmission protocol used by Novell. The hardware and software package allows a network to
connect to the Net using a single IP address.

Other networking firms, such as 3Com and Ascend Communications, offer similar variations on
the same theme.

The new software adds support for address translation, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol), and various remote management options. The update also includes three proxy options,
retaining the level of security that allows the box to essentially act as a firewall.

Investment bank Bear Stearns is among the beta testers for the software, using the boxes to
implement VPN-style (virtual private network) connections, according to a Bay executive.

The software update is available for both the BayStack Instant Internet 100, announced last fall,
and the 400 model, which has support for more users and a wider variety of connections.

Herring on the Enterprise Conference Examines the Future of
Corporate Networks - 08:20 a.m. Apr 13, 1998 Eastern

SAN FRANCISCO, HERRING ON THE ENTERPRISE, April 13 /PRNewswire/
-- The Red Herring gathered more than 300 enterprise solution providers, CIOs,
business development, IT, and financial executives this week to participate in its
first-annual Herring on the Enterprise conference, April 6-7 at the Ritz- Carlton
hotel.

Novell CEO Eric Schmidt opened the event describing the "new face
of networking," while Eric Benhamou, CEO of 3Com, outlined ten
industry transitions for creating end-to-end connectivity.

As a business strategy conference, Herring on the Enterprise is designed to give
CIOs and CTOs an idea of the technology changes that will matter most to them in
their business decisions.

Eric Schmidt gave attendees a ten-thousand-foot view of the
networking industry, discussing the five rules he believes will
govern the evolution of the enterprise:

1. The Web changes everything.

2. Bandwidth demand is insatiable.

3. All data and voice will be on IP.

4. Fiber optic capacity doubles every 12 months.

5. All computing will be networked.

"When we finally put this all together, the rate of change is going
to be profound," Schmidt stressed. In his keynote address, Eric
Benhamou called for a strategic alignment between public and private
networks, saying that the migration to converged networks will be
the most powerful driver of the IT industry for the next several
years. He also explained ten major transitions that he believes
must take place in the networking industry for end-to-end
connectivity, including the transition to public access networks
and the transition from an enterprise carrier-only market to small
business and consumer markets.

"Herring on the Enterprise was extremely successful in laying out the future of the
corporate enterprise" said Rafe Needleman, The Red Herring events editorial
director. "Giving enterprise technologists a road map for the future while, offering
practical insights on everything from E-commerce to Java helps them with the
decisions they must make today -- that will greatly impact their businesses in the
future."

The Red Herring's Business Strategy Conferences

The Red Herring's flagship Venture Market events bring startup companies
together with the financial community. To complement the Venture Market series,
the Business Strategy conferences give executives the critical insight they need to
wisely invest in technologies for their future. Herring on the Enterprise and Herring
on Hollywood (July 27-28 in Santa Monica) take an in- depth look at industry
trends, emerging companies, and the future challenges and opportunities technology
changes will bring. Also produced by The Red Herring is NDA, an exclusive
international business conference taking place Nov. 2-3 in La Jolla, CA. For more
