Jim and Intel Investors - AMD's Partner is Partnering with Intel Read all about IBM, Intel and E-Tools. Paul {======================= April 13, 1998, TechWeb News NEW SERVICES: Expands Intel Partnership IBM Looks To Ease Network Management With E-Tools By Jeff Bliss Somers, N.Y. -- Armed with new software, hardware, services and financing offerings, IBM Personal Systems Group this week will try to address a perennial reseller complaint-the difficulty of managing a PC network. Billed as E-Tools for E-Business, these services and products will include an expanded partnership with Intel Corp., an offering that automatically backs up hard drives periodically and an update of the LANClient Control Manager management suite, said sources familiar with the company's plans. IBM will place responsibility for PC management under the SystemXtra services program, sources said. IBM will offer services and financing to help set up intranets or ready businesses for Web technology, the sources said. Any progress in easing the complexity and cost of overseeing PCs is welcome, resellers said. "IBM is really making it fairly simple to set up good control on a managed LAN," said a reseller familiar with the company's strategy. Resellers can expect other companies to follow suit, analysts said. "The bundling of products and applications appears to be a real strong trend in Web-oriented applications," said Marty Gruhn, vice president of Internet business solutions at Summit Strategies, a Boston-based research firm. At the Wednesday event, IBM will demonstrate the management features on integrated hardware and software. A new product, Smart Reaction, will send an alert when a hard drive fails and automatically back up a storage system, sources said. In future releases, Smart Reaction's self-diagnosing capabilities will be extended to other PC components, such as memory, sources said. Somers-based IBM will add WAN capabilities to the LAN Client Control Manager, sources said. A simplified interface for the management software will make it easier to set up and spot problems in a network, sources said. Wake on LAN will be updated to work on the company's Netfinity server line. Wake on LAN allows for automatic software loads after business hours. IBM also will expand its relationship with Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., to more tightly integrate the vendors' management strategies. Intel's presence also will be felt in the new servers, desktop PCs and workstations IBM will exhibit featuring the Pentium II processor (see story, page 12) Copyright (c) 1998 CMP Media Inc.
